According to the LFI MP, there are 13 times more unemployed people than unfilled jobs. This is true if we take into account all job seekers. But not if we refer to those who have no professional activity (category A).
After a new phrase that Emmanuel Macron has the secret of, the whole left is scandalized. According to the President of the Republic, then visiting Marseille, it would be enough to walk around the Old Port to find “10 job offers”. An obvious reference to his first release five years ago about “cross the street” and which had been just as displeasing at the time. The reality would be less obvious with a tight labor market and “one job vacancy for 13 unemployed people”to in believe Manuel Bompard, deputy of Nupes.
An order of magnitude that dates back to 2021
According to Dares, the statistics service of the Ministry of Labor, vacant positions are those which are “free, newly created or unoccupied, or still occupied and about to become available, for which active steps are being taken to find a suitable candidate”This order of magnitude of one vacant position for 13 unemployed people is cited in a article by Releasegraph in support.
Here is what we can read: “The number of vacant jobs, however, remains much lower than the number of job seekers: if we stick to category A unemployed people (without any activity), there is today one vacant position for every thirteen unemployed people. By extending this to job seekers in the broader sense (with category B and C unemployed people), we arrive at one position for every 22 job seekers.” Although these figures are sourced and reliable, they are nonetheless obsolete since they date back to 2021.
2.8 million unemployed in 2023
According to the latest figures According to the Dares, 375,500 jobs are vacant in the first quarter of 2023. A decrease of 5% compared to the last quarter of 2022, but an increase of 73% compared to the last quarter of 2019, before the pandemic. Among them, half (51%) correspond to unoccupied jobs, while the others refer to new jobs or those about to be vacated.
Compared with the number of unemployed known to Pôle Emploi2.8 million people are registered in category A in the first quarter of this year. This is equivalent to one vacant position for every seven unemployed people… almost half as many as Manuel Bompard mentioned. Now, if we include the first three categories listed by Pôle Emploi, there are still more than 5 million job seekers in the country. That is, a little more than 13 unemployed people for every unfilled job (13.5 to be precise).
The reduction in this gap is explained by the fact that the number of unfilled jobs has increased, while the number of unemployed in category A has decreased. However, it is traditional, when mentioning the number of unemployed, to focus on category A alone, which corresponds to the total absence of professional activity. Categories B and C include short and long reduced activities.
