Over the decades, the French professional landscape has undergone major transformations, revealing significant trends in the evolution of professions and work. An INSEE study, published on Monday April 29, highlights these significant changes, providing a portrait of professions in 2022.
First, the rise of executives is undeniable. In the space of four decades, their number has tripled, benefiting from the boom in the tertiarization of the economy and the rise in qualifications. At the same time, the agricultural sector has seen its share decrease drastically, with farmers now representing a minimal fraction of the active population.
However, this growth of managers has not obscured the continuing importance of employees and workers. If workers once outnumbered employees, this trend has reversed, with a clear prevalence of jobs in the service sector.
An analysis by gender also reveals significant disparities. Women are largely represented among employees, while workers remain predominantly men. Despite a male predominance among executives, parity is progressing slowly.
Furthermore, young people often find themselves in less qualified jobs, particularly due to prolonged studies. Atypical hours have become commonplace, with almost half of employees sometimes working on Saturdays, and a significant proportion of workers working night shifts.
Finally, the question of part-time reveals disparities between men and women, with a female predominance in this mode of work, particularly widespread among employees. Even among managers, women are more likely to work part-time than their male counterparts.
These trends underline the importance of taking into account changes in the labor market to understand socio-professional dynamics in France.
