There are hundreds of thousands of job offers in France. This is a fact that should be taken with caution, however, because some offers have only just been published, and other positions are still occupied but are nevertheless considered vacant.

A new controversial little phrase for the head of state. On a trip to Marseille on Monday June 26, Emmanuel Macron affirmed that there were “hundreds of thousands of unfilled jobs” in the country. He was responding to a woman who was telling him about the situation of her son, who has been unemployed for a long time. The head of state then invited her to take a “tour of the Old Port”telling him that he was sure to find “ten job offers”.
According to the statistics department of the Ministry of Labor (Dares), in the first quarter of 2023, There were exactly 375,500 vacant jobs in France. Figures to be taken with caution because they come from a study carried out on companies with ten or more employees. This therefore excludes a part of small companies: artisanssmall businesses, etc. So there may be even more jobs available. Then, only jobs in the private sector are counted.
But looking more closely at these data, we realize that there are three categories, in what Dares defines as “vacant” jobs. Half of them are unoccupied positions, for which companies are struggling to recruit. For a little over a quarter, these are positions that have just been created. So we cannot yet say that recruiters are having trouble finding candidates. Finally, 21% of positions are about to become available. The employee will soon leave but is still there: these are therefore vacant but still occupied jobs!
The so-called professions domestic service (housekeeper, domestic employee, etc.), assistance to adults (care assistant, employee of an EHPAD, etc.) or even the kitchen staff (clerk, pastry chef, section chef) are also in high demand.
To explain these recruitment difficulties, Pôle emploi and Dares put forward several explanations. These are jobs with restrictive working conditions: staggered hours, split days, physical work. They are also contracts with short duration: fixed-term contracts or part-time contracts, for example. There is also sometimes a gap between the training of candidates and that required by companies. Finally, recruiters and candidates are not always located in the same region.
